PROTOTYPING & TESTING
CONCEPT THROUGH TO PRODUCTION
The prototyping and testing process takes the initial concept of a product and transforms it into a fully developed, functional, and marketable end product. This involves constant iterations and improvements based on feedback received during each stage, resulting in a high-quality product that meets customer needs. It also allows for any issues to be identified early on, reducing costs and time-to-market. Continual iteration offers the advantage of refining design while ensuring that the intended benefits and features are not inadvertently compromised. This iterative approach also facilitates ongoing consultation with product marketing teams and customers, guaranteeing that their input is consistently taken into account.
PROOF OF PRINCIPLE PROTOTYPING
The first stage of prototyping and testing is known as proof of principle (POP) prototyping. This involves creating a very basic version of the product or service to test its core concept and verify that it works in theory. POP prototypes are usually low-cost and quick to produce, allowing for multiple iterations before moving on to more advanced stages. This stage is essential in identifying any major flaws or issues with the initial idea, allowing for changes to be made before moving on to more expensive and time-consuming steps. Usually paying little or no attention to how the concept looks aesthetically at this stage.
RAPID PROTOTYPING
As the name suggests, rapid prototyping is a fast and efficient way to create prototypes for testing. This method uses computer-aided design (CAD) software and CNC or 3D printing technologies to quickly produce functional prototypes. Unlike POP prototyping, rapid prototyping does not focus solely on the core concept but takes into account the product’s visual appearance and functionality. This allows for a more advanced prototype to be created in a shorter period, reducing development time and costs.
SLA 3D PRINTING
One of the most common methods used in rapid prototyping is SLA (stereolithography) 3D printing. This technology uses a laser beam to selectively cure liquid resin into solid layers, creating precise and detailed prototypes. SLA 3D printing is ideal for creating visual appearance models as the level of detail can be adjusted to meet specific requirements. This technology is also used to create working prototypes that closely mimic the final product, allowing for extensive testing before moving on to production.
WORKING PROTOTYPES
Working prototypes are advanced versions of the product or service created using rapid prototyping technologies. These prototypes are fully functional and can be used for development testing, allowing for any design or functionality issues to be identified and addressed before moving on to production. Working prototypes can also be used for user testing, allowing for valuable feedback that can improve the final product. Manufactured to a suitable level of safety these prototypes can be used to surface vital feedback from users when used by our research team to facilitate our Home User Trials.
VISUAL APPEARANCE MODELS
Visual appearance models are prototypes created specifically to showcase the product’s visual aesthetics. These models are usually created using 3D printing technologies and can be highly detailed, providing a realistic representation of the final product. This type of prototype is often used for marketing purposes to showcase the product’s design and generate interest from potential customers.
PRE-PRODUCTION PROTOTYPES
Pre-production prototypes are advanced versions of the product that closely resemble the final product in terms of design, functionality, and materials used. These prototypes are created using the actual production methods and can be used to test the product’s manufacturing process. This stage allows for any issues with production to be identified and addressed before moving on to mass production.
DEVELOPMENT TESTING
Development testing is a crucial step in prototyping and involves rigorous testing of the prototype to ensure it meets safety, durability, and regulatory standards. This stage also involves testing the product’s performance and functionality to ensure it meets customer expectations. Through development testing, any necessary adjustments can be made before moving on to production.
TESTING; SAFETY, DURABILITY AND REGULATIONS
Safety, durability, and regulatory testing are essential for any product that will be released to the public. These tests ensure that the product meets safety standards and is durable enough to withstand regular use. It also ensures that the product complies with all necessary regulations and certifications. Any issues found during testing can be addressed before the product is released to the market, ensuring a safe and reliable end product for customers.
