Breathlessness is a problem shared by many people with chronic illnesses such as asthma, COPD and emphysema. While improving lung function is critical for these patients, it is also important for elite athletes. For patients, weak breathing muscles can affect daily life, making even breathing itself a hardship. Athletes, meanwhile, already have highly conditioned breathing muscles but are constantly pursuing the next level of performance.

POWERbreathe partnered with Smallfry to develop a medical product that could both dramatically improve the lives of patients and meet the precise standards demanded by professional athletes.

User-Centred Process

Using our insight-led design process, we worked with POWERbreathe and their engineers to identify the unseen needs of both patients and athletes. The POWERbreathe K1 was designed to suit both the clinical environments patients navigate and the active lifestyles of aspiring athletes.

Strengthening Muscles

The resulting product, the POWERbreathe K1, is an electronic inspiratory muscle trainer developed to support breathing training. By providing resistance to airflow during inhalation, the POWERbreathe K1 help strengthen breathing muscles, reduce breathlessness and improve stamina.

The Result

The POWERbreathe K1 is completely portable and can be used by anyone, anywhere. The head of the product can be easily removed for sterilisation, while  a mechanical interface and electro-mechanical system effortlessly re-index the valve with every use. As a result, POWERbreathe bridges the needs of both athletes and patients without compromising the experience of either, going on to win the UK Plastics Industry’s most prestigious award, the ‘Consumer Product Design of the Year’.
