Smallfry were approached by QED to help design their next-generation Gas Analyser. The goal was to give the new product a visual refresh with a suitably rugged appearance while enabling seamless operation in harsh conditions.

Our design team optimised the user experience by integrating a touchscreen with tactile buttons to reduce errors and accelerate workflows. The device achieved ATEX, IECEx, and UKEX certifications, making it safe for use in volatile gas environments.

The GEM PRO is the first in QED’s new PRO Series, built for operators who need fast, flexible, and future-ready landfill gas analysis. It is the only landfill gas analyser that allows users to replace and add gas modules in-house or in the field, eliminating the need to send your analyser back to the factory for service or calibration.

Optimised For Use In Any Environment

With an operating temperature range of -10°C to +45°C and an IP65 ingress protection rating, the GEM PRO is engineered to perform in almost any environment. To accommodate this range of conditions, Smallfry designed a user interface that combines a touchscreen with physical buttons.

Upon review with the target user, it was clear that a high-resolution touchscreen would offer the fastest input in many scenarios; however, sometimes, when working in harsher conditions with gloves, this can become difficult. By including physical buttons, we were able to design an adaptable interface that gives users the flexibility to use the product easily, regardless of the conditions.

To support the development process, Smallfry created multiple UI/UX prototypes that were tested with users to evaluate real-world ergonomics. This feedback was vital to ensure the design approach was both practical and user-centred.
